Abalone Feast, Woljeongri Beach & Seongsan Ilchulbong - Jeju

Hello guys, this is going to be the last Jeju post for now.

Day 3 was spent on the east part of Jeju island.

We were tossing up between Kimbap Cheonguk or Ollae Guksu for breakfast but Mr.W insisted on getting pork noodles (again!).

Our GPS had issues getting to this restaurant so we ended up using Naver Maps on our phone.

We waited for approximately 15 minutes before being seated. There's only one thing on the menu, pork soup noodles, and everyone has to order one serving so no need to worry if you can't speak much Korean.

The servings of the noodles were huge, it was served with huge chunks of pork in broth with sesame seeds, spring onions and strong sesame oil flavor, it actually tasted quite similar to the original Japanese Nissan instant noodles.

The noodles were served with some basic side dishes as displayed in the photo above and some customers were even putting kimchi in to their noodles.

We thought the noodles were pretty normal, nothing special and we couldn't even finish the bowl! Out of Jamae Guksu or Ollae Guksu we prefer Jamae Guksu! (You can visit my Jamae Guksu post here)

After our meal we drove approximately 50 minutes to Woljeongri Beach.

With limited time, we decided to visit Woljeongri Beach over Udo because the waters in the photos of Woljeongri Beach looked amazing with clear calm blue water and we wanted to do the "see through kayaking" on the beach. Unfortunately we chose a day where there were big winds and the skies were gloomy so the kayaking service was closed and the sea had high tides.

There were many restaurants next to the beach so we ended up taking a few photos on the beach before visiting a cafe to get a drink and relax.

It was a shame that we couldn't see and enjoy Woljeongri Beach the way we wanted to so I hope you guys pick a day when the sun is shining bright!

After our disappointment at the beach we went to the highly anticipated Myeongjin Jeonbok!

Myeongjin Jeonbok is a famous and crowded abalone restaurant that only has 4 dishes on the menu. We arrived at approximately 2PM and had to wait almost 45 minutes to get a seat! When we were waiting for a seat, next door sold us some little Jeju mandarin flavored snacks shaped like the Jeju grandpa stones.

When we first arrived at the restaurant, we put our names down for a table and chose which dishes we wanted. The four dishes available were:

1. Abalone sizzling stone pot rice ~KRW15,000

2. Rice porridge with abalone ~KRW12,000

3. Grilled abalones 500g ~KRW30,000

4. Slices of raw abalones 400g ~KRW30,000

We ordered an abalone sizzling stone pot rice and a plate of raw slices of abalones and got everything else you see in the picture below for free! (yep even that grilled fish was free!).

The sizzling stone pot was really hot and had a strong abalone aroma. The abalones were also big and fresh. We mixed the rice with the abalone quickly and put it into our bowls, after we emptied the majority of the pot we poured some water from the kettle (top photo, bottle right) and put the lid on to the sizzling pot to allow the water to soak the rice that was stuck to the edge of the pot.

The raw abalones were very interesting, usually cooked abalones are chewy but the raw ones we had were very stiff and not chewy at all. The abalones tasted fresh however we were afraid to try the internal organs (?) of the abalones that were placed in the middle of the dish so we just had the abalones with the salt and chili sauce provided.

Other than the usual side dishes, the restaurant also provided us with squid kimchi and soup which was a bit different however our favorite side dish was the grilled fish. The fish was of decent sized and was nicely grilled. We were very amazed by how generous the restaurant was giving every customer half a fish for free!

After finishing the rice in our bowls we had the rice soaked in water, although the water looked murky it still tasted light and I felt like I was drinking flavored water. Overall I enjoyed the meal a lot, the various different combinations of dishes worked really well together and I would definitely like to visit again in the future.

After our meal we went to Seongsan Ilchulbong Jeju.

Seongsan Ilchulbong Jeju

Seongsan Ilchulbong, also known as Sunrise Peak, is a heritage site. Many tourists visit here to see the sunrise but we went in the late afternoon. You're suppose to pay entrance fees but for some reason when we went the ticket offices were closed (yay lucky us!).

The hike to the top of the peak was approximately 20-30 minutes. Along the way to the top there should have been areas to go horse riding however we didn't see any horses but just signs that says horse riding is available and also signs that says that there are Jeju mermaid shows which had already finished for the day when we were there.

Yay! We finally made it to the top!
